BACKGROUND

SUBIRE Business School is a ground breaking institution focusing on academic excellence and superior care for its students. This institution commissioned Dünn to create a multipurpose space for its headquarters in Zapopan. This new area was to allow parent/teacher meetings, festivals, etc. The cover needed to be installed on the existing structure of classrooms building.

CHALLENGE

Covering the area without any intermediate support columns. The installation only allowed for rope access at great heights with the use of climbing equipment.

PROPOSAL

Covering six basketball courts with a free space structure to be used as a multipurpose area. As an added value, this cover would protect students from the sun and UV rays during their school and sports activities.

DEVELOPMENT

Dunn carried out a topographical survey with the location of the columns of the existing buildings. It was based on the design of a structure that works with tension, yet also functions without any structural steel support of the membrane. The base lies at the cables and tensioners which consist of 40 meters in length and contain a resistance of 103 at a diameter of an inch. The tension is calculated according to the load that which the membrane will be withstanding, the most prevalent of tension coming from the wind. To analyze the maximum force, a wind tunnel, water and hail were all proven to be of no match to the structures resistance. Dunn fabricated the structure of the steel,  the cables, the membrane and other various parts. Dunn as well applied the material Ferrari 1202 t2 with has a 15 year guaranteed warranty. The final support structure is achieved by making use of the buildings that are on the perimeter of the court.

OUTCOME

An iconic and representative cover for the school yard. Calculations made by our engineers allowed the use of the existing structural elements without adding additional support. The innovative cover design has been approved by students, parents and teachers of the institution.
