Dünn was an integral part in the success of this important project. Our engineering team achieved the “impossible” by designing the iconic Mexican Pavillion at Expo Milan 2015.

HIGHLIGHTS

BACKGROUND

The International Exhibition of Milan 2015 also deemed as the Universal Exhibition for promotions and communications is the second International Expo to appear just after its predecessor, Shanghai 2010.

“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, is the theme of the great event where pavilions from many countries can be appreciate, the winning project of “National Competition of Pavilion Design in Mexico”  this Universal Expo of Milan, will be presented from May 1st until the October 31st 2015.

CHALLENGE

Both the time factor and working under strict safety EU standards. Dünn was able to engineer the project while keeping the architectural concept of “corn leafs” suspended in the air with a light and translucent material.

Numerous architectural and structural challenges were faced during the process. The “leafs” were 20 to 30 meters tall and held together by an overlapping effect. Our team was able to achieve the goal of such complicated geometry with a modern material.

PROPOSAL

The prestigious firm Loguer Design, relied on Dünn engineer and develop the structural design of the mesh facade.

DEVELOPMENT

This was a 4 month project that had been coordinated between Dünn, Mexico, Loguer, and the Milan authorities. It worked under the design standards and supervision of the European Union.

Dünn modified the architectural design that was possible for its construction. The project had been structurally developed as a virtual wind tunnel, optimizing the structure and the mathematical models as a whole.

The whole system was made so that it could be disassembled in order to be reassembled in Milan.

OUTCOME

A pavilion with an outer fabric membrane that allows filtering sunlight and transparency and warm lit element at night. A crafted and sculptural project made possible by Dunn.
